Harrogate Golf Club – Press Report 18-11-2024

The first half of November has given us a remarkable period of mild and dry weather and our players have taken full advantage. We have played all of our competitions over 17 holes as our green keepers have also used the benign conditions to close the 17th for essential maintenance and drainage work.

On the 3rd and 5th of November, the Ladies played their first Stableford on the winter course over 17 holes. Margaret Bleasdale scored a two at the 12th hole.

Results: Div. 1. 1st Elaine Shepherd, 29 pts. 2nd Val Thornborrow, 26 pts. 3rd Pat Benson, 20 pts.

Div. 2. 1st Boo Orman, 31 pts. 2nd Ann Lancaster, 28 pts. 3rd Margaret Bleasdale, 27 pts.

Div. 3. 1st Lindsay Bancroft, 30 pts. 2nd Liz Haw, 27 pts. 3rd Dee Lewin Jones, 25 pts. Celia Fowler won the 9-hole version with 17 points.

The mid-week Stableford that week gave us an outstanding performance and a first appearance as a winner for Wayne Crick, with a playing h/c of 1 and scoring 38 points, his only blemish being a bogie on the Stoke Index 1, par 4, 13th. Three players came in tied on 35 points with Chris Schofield (19) taking second on count-back from Ian Birchall (13) and Phil Strong (20).

We held a team of 3, Texas Scramble on Sat. 9th and what a “scramble” it was to claim the win. First and second were tied on nett 52 just one shot ahead of the teams in third, and fourth also tied. It was the team of Daniel Westerman, Howard Kemp & Karl Wilkinson that came out on top having the better back nine from the trio of Andy Tipling, Peter Bainbridge & Jonathan Callard.

Results: Texas Scramble: 1st D. Westerman/H. Kemp/K. Westerman, nett 52 (bb9). 2nd A. Tipling/P. Bainbridge/J. Callard, nett 52. 3rd J. Peel/A. Bowman/G. Manby, nett 53 (bb9). 4th M. Thomas/P. Skardon/K. Florence, 53 nett.

On Tuesday 12th eight pairs of Ladies played the Winter Foursomes. The top four pairs now go on to play in the knockout stages to determine the winners of the trophy.

The four qualifying pairs are: 1st N. Butters / B. Orman, 92 – P.H. 26 = 66 nett. 2nd K. Myers / M. Brown, 98 – 28 = 70. 3rd E. Shepherd / J. Hill, 87 – 17 = 70. 4th A. Lancaster / J. Moorhouse, 99 – 29 = 70.

Ian Birchall and Phil Strong built on their solid performance of the previous week to improve on their placings in last week’s mid-week Stableford. Birchall, playing off 13 and scoring 35 points, did enough to win from Paul Martin (5) who put in another fine effort to finish in second place with 34 points. Also, on 34 points and after a count-back it was a third place this week for Phil Strong (20).

Last Saturday’s team event was the “Yellow Ball” Stableford played in teams of 3. With two scores to count on each hole, one must be from the player with the “yellow ball”. The Yellow Ball is Player 1 on the first hole, player 2 on the 2nd and Player 3 on the 3rd and so on in that sequence. Luke Donnelly, Jack Farrer & Carl Bearman were in sparkling form winning by 4 clear shots from two teams tied on nett 73. The count-back confirmed 2nd place to the team of Vince McLaughlin, Tim Fox & Jason Brown leaving the team of the Club Chairman and the Course Director with Jonathan Voller in third place.

Results: Yellow Ball: 1st L. Donnelly/J. Farrer/C. Bearman, 77 pts. 2nd V/McLaughlin/T. Fox/ J. Brown, 73 pts. (bb9). 3rd W. Culver-Dodds/J. Voller/R. McKenzie, 73 pts.
